The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) and Carle Health System (Carle) have embarked on an exciting endeavor by creating the nation's first engineering-based college of medicine. In partnership, Carle and Illinois are seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the first permanent Director of Faculty Development.
The Director of Faculty Development will work collaboratively to establish and maintain programs and opportunities for faculty professional growth to support teaching in the college's active learning curriculum, and will monitor and strive for continuous improvement in faculty excellence. The Director for Faculty Development will also oversee workshops and other mechanisms to train faculty in the pedagogies of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.
This is a rare opportunity to join an enthusiastically engaged, multi-disciplinary group of academic scholars, health care professionals, and specialists in medical education at the intersection of engineering, biological, and clinical sciences. It is planned that the individual in this administrative role will have full-time, benefits eligible, University employment. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The start date will be as soon as possible after the close of the search.
Responsibilities of the position include the following:
- Provide vision, and direction as the lead person to develop and implement pedagogy training and professional development programs for faculty within the educational missions of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.
- Create and implement faculty development events, workshops, programs, seminars, learning communities, retreats and conferences designed to improve teaching and learning in the case-driven problem-based active learning environment.
- Oversee mechanisms and efforts to foster a culture of positive inter-professional relationships, particularly those that involve faculty to bridge the college's private/public organization and mission, including positive relationships with clinical faculty.
- Oversee mechanisms and efforts to foster a culture of inter-professional relationships with other Colleges that serve as the primary appointment home for faculty.
- Assist the Department Heads and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in recruiting and developing a diverse faculty from a broad spectrum of disciplines who will work together to contribute biomedical science, engineering, and clinical knowledge, skills and abilities to provide an MD curriculum in an active learning environment.
- Organize classroom observation and peer feedback for teaching faculty.
- Collaborate to design and implement a comprehensive program for growth of faculty, including facilitators at all career stages.
- Provide a basis for enhancing individual teaching effectiveness by consulting with individual faculty and identifying resources for growth.
- Work with medical education staff and administrators who assess curriculum, and the effectiveness of its delivery, in order to provide faculty development for continuous improvement.
- Work with the area of academic technologies to ensure support for faculty growth.
- Create and coordinate a "new faculty" orientation program; provide networking opportunities, focus group opportunities, and invited guest scholar and clinician programs to promote educational scholarship.
- Work with staff in other campus colleges for mutual support and access to existing faculty development programs that are beneficial to the College of Medicine.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive knowledge about current research on professional development for medical school faculty and contemporary programs that support faculty; acquire and maintain knowledge of best practices for medical school pedagogies in the area of faculty growth and development.
- May supervise additional staff members as needed.
- Master's degree in education and/or master's degree with at least 3 years of significant experience in working collaboratively with faculty in problem-based learning methodologies at a medical school.
- Doctoral degree in education or advanced graduate or professional degree in a biomedical or engineering field that is related to the Carle Illinois College of Medicine mission and curriculum with significant problem-based teaching experience.
Required experience, skills and abilities include:
- Faculty development experience, training, or significant mentorship over faculty in a medical or higher education setting.
- Experience working with faculty from a wide range of academic medical, biological and/or engineering fields.
- Evidence of excellent data analysis skills.
- Demonstrated leadership competency and ability to develop productive working relationships with multiple constituencies.
- Must be willing to learn all aspects of the college's curriculum, criteria for faculty recruitment and promotions, and professionalism expectations.
- Skills and abilities to communicate clearly, incorporating tact and diplomacy to maintain harmonious working relationships, and effectively address complex and sensitive administrative issues.
- Ability to think both independently and collaboratively to creatively and effectively solve problems.
- Ability to cultivate and maintain good inter-personnel and inter-unit relationships.
- Need to be able to work cooperatively with all constituencies in a unique environment of engineering-based medical education in the context of the Carle and Illinois private/public relationship.
