The opportunity:




An outstanding opportunity exists for a Chief Executive Officer to join St. Paul Eye Clinic, P.A. a strong physician-owned multi-specialty Ophthalmology/Optometry groups which will consist of 20+ providers operating six full-service locations in the greater St. Paul market. The successful candidate will replace our existing CEO who will retire in August of this year. St Paul Eye Clinic also owns and operates six optical stores, a real estate partnership and two ASCs.

The practice:




Founded in 1969, St. Paul Eye Clinic, P.A. (SPEC) is one of the oldest, largest, and most respected physician-owned and operated ophthalmology/optometry practices in the state of Minnesota. The practice offers a comprehensive and seamless model of care from the very youngest of patients to those with 100+ years of living experience. We support our providers with a highly trained technical, professional, and support staff. SPEC physicians are trained to provide specialty care covering the entire range of ophthalmic needs including Cataracts, Retina, Glaucoma, Cornea, Pediatric and Adult Strabismus, Oculoplastics, and LASIK. Our optometrists provide comprehensive eye care and work side by side with the physicians. Our optical shops are staffed by experienced opticians who provide glasses, contact lenses, and specialty lenses for our patients. SPEC’s providers, scope of services, history of being identified as a “high value” provider by payers allows SPEC to have strong in-network participation agreements with all major managed care plans. SPEC’s physicians are board certified and fellowship-trained by some of the world’s leading ophthalmology programs. Inside our optical shops, we utilize certified opticians and contact lens fitters, which distinguishes our services from other providers.


The role:




The CEO will report to, and serve at the will of, the Board of Directors

The CEO selected for this position will have the unique opportunity to build upon a strong foundation by assisting in the ongoing development, review and execution of a strategic plan that is founded on actions intended to ensure the perpetuity of SPEC as a strong, market leading, independent group practice. In conjunction with the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors, this individual will lead the conception and enhancement of growth initiatives, board governance and administrative structures, policy and procedure development, diversification strategies, leveraging current and future technology advancements, and financial performance. In addition to SPEC, the CEO will also serve as the executive for St. Paul Opticians and Lone Oak Partners, LLC. This role will also provide leadership to Midwest Surgery Center, our 2-site ambulatory surgery center partnership.

This opportunity is ideally suited for an individual with innate abilities in building strategic and tactical business plans, developing exceptional administrative teams, and forging physician relationships that are cultivated through thought processes that are creative, collaborative, and decisive.






The candidate:


Ø Experience: Prefer 7+ years of successful executive-level experience leading a multi-specialty group practice or related medical group practice. Possess in-depth knowledge and skills in the areas of physician practice management, financial and revenue cycle management, managed care negotiations and contracting, marketing, billing and information systems, human resources, governance, and managing complex enterprises. Needs to have demonstrated that he/she is capable of building an operational infrastructure that can support current business and projected growth for an organization with similar dynamics. Must have a bachelor's degree in business or a related field of study, with an MBA or MHA being highly desirable.


Ø Leadership: Sets the standard as a representative for St. Paul Eye Clinic, P.A. (SPEC). A natural leader who shows a consistent pattern of adding value to each encounter he/she will face. Can achieve consensus, support, and action on a broad scale throughout the organization on the strength of their impact and initiative. Active in setting the tone for the group culture through how they manage themselves and lead others.


Ø Communication Skills: Seen as thoughtful, direct, and truthful. Can respond and execute swiftly with sound reasoning when making decisions that will have an impact on the group as a whole. Visible - gets out among the employees and physicians at all levels within SPEC. Gains first-hand feedback from being an active and trusted participant throughout the organization.


Ø Organization Skills: Able to manage multiple activities simultaneously without missing commitments. Values the importance of planning, follow-up, detail, and accuracy. Capable of setting agendas, meeting timelines, and moving initiatives forward. Delegates effectively and clearly and holds team members accountable for achieving results.

Constantly looks for ways to contribute to the success of the organization and recognizes others for their contribution by openly sharing wins and successes. Strives to blend all facets into a cohesive action plan that fulfills SPEC’s Mission Statement while at the same time achieves the requisite growth and profitability goals.

The expectations:


Ø Provide leadership in the conception, planning, and development of strategies and objectives for consideration and adoption by the Board of Directors. Works closely with the physicians, members of the leadership team, committee chairpersons, associates, and advisors in the formulation of specific recommendations.




Ø Establish a business climate that will ensure the success of the organization’s business and is gladly embraced by each member of the organization. This will require “straight talk,” collaboration, and integration of original thoughts and perspectives.




Ø Recruit, select, and appoint members of the management team to direct the affairs of the organization. Direct their activities and evaluate their performance. Establish formal means of accountability for those to whom he/she has assigned duties. Provide appropriate staff support for the development of short and long-term strategic plans.




Ø Assure that all employees are given an orientation to the mission of the organization and instilled with a passion for SPEC’s “Practice Value Philosophy”. Ensure that all employees are adequately trained for their position, are provided with an opportunity for continuing education and advancement, and are instilled with an attitude that promotes cordial relationships with patients, physicians, and staff.Delete this space




Ø Maintain and safeguard the property of the organization.




Ø Direct the business and financial affairs of the organization by employing a system of accountability to ensure responsible fiscal management including accounting, budgeting, internal controls, and timely reporting.




Ø Study and present to all members of SPEC ways of enhancing operational effectiveness and gaining efficiency while placing special emphasis on cost containment approaches to the extent possible without jeopardizing important innovation, progress, or quality of care.




Ø Represent the organization in its relationships with community businesses and civic associations, government agencies, and professional organizations.




Ø Report regularly to the Executive Board and Partners on the operation of the organization and the performance of its various departments.




Ø Ensure that all activities of the organization comply with all federal and state statutes. Keeps abreast of pending legislation.




Ø Serves as an active participant on various committees and leads committees as designated by the Board of Directors.




Ø Implement Best Business Practices in an equitable and ethical manner.






The compensation & benefits package:




The CEO’s compensation will be commensurate with experience and comprised of a base salary and a performance bonus. Additional benefits include health, dental, disability, and vision insurance, participation in two retirement plans, a relocation allowance, a continuing education allowance (days and dollars) and paid time off.
